The duties of a Project Engineer at W. M. Lyles Co. revolve around bidding and managing construction projects. We are a construction firm and not a design firm. The duties of a project engineer are not necessarily design oriented. Our work is typically classified as part of the Heavy and Municipal Utility Construction field.
Bidding and managing construction projects in today's competitive climate is very challenging. The Project Engineer position is designed as an entry level position leading toward project management. Many of the duties are designed to develop the skills required or project management. We tend to avoid specialization and focus on learning and developing the skills that will eventually be required of project management. We believe that the best projects are those where all parties work very closely together focusing on the project goals. People skills are essential for success with owners, engineers, construction managers, supplier's, subcontractors, and our own field crews. Internally, we believe the synergistic combination of the skills which our foreman and project management bring to the project have created our firm's success.
We tend to emphasize intensive onsite project management. There is a tremendous sense of accomplishment when project goals are achieved. Onsite project management requires long hours, extensive driving, and may often require living out of town. The job is not an eight hour a day job. Project Management requires a wide range of skills. It has been stated that a Project Manager must make 160 decisions a day, 3-4 times as many as contemporaries in other industries. Project Management requires the ability to see the big picture as well as focus on the details which make a project a success. During the first month of employment, the entry level Project Engineer will work in the field, meeting our field crews and getting to know the type of work we do. Additional skills will be added over one year training period.
These skills include timekeeping, cost control, scheduling, safety, quality control, submittals, estimating, change orders, purchasing, labor relations, contract interpretation, equipment maintenance, etc.
