January 2, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of my Grandparents starting W.M. Lyles Co., a small pipeline and trenching construction company, on their dining room table in Avenal, California. The initial equipment yard was their backyard. The first capital came from their own post-depression era savings along with loans from each of their parents.
Today, the Lyles Construction Group has grown to also include American Paving Co., Lyles Services Co., Lyles Mechanical Co. and Lyles Utility, LLC. We are the largest contractor headquartered in the San Joaquin Valley, one of the 400 largest contractors in the U.S., one of the 200 largest environmental companies in the U.S. and one of the 2 largest water contractors in California. Our safety programs have been recognized with both California and National Awards. We have come a long way since 1945.
Surviving for 70 years places us in unique company.
We are doing much more than surviving. Today, we are thriving, and our future has never been brighter. I am amazed at what our team of employees has accomplished, with a focus on complex infrastructure and industrial construction throughout California. I am excited about our future, as we have a wonderful next generation developing.
We have a great heritage.
The key to our success goes beyond our current talent to the values passed down from those who preceded us:
- Treating others the way we would wish to be treated (Rotary’s 4 Way Test)
- Strong Work Ethic
- Attention to Details – Cost, Schedule, Quality
- Safety – Having our employees return home each day the way they started.
- Can Do Attitude
- Individual Authority and Responsibility
Following these values, our current generation of leadership has expanded our skills to include:
- Open Book Estimates which have led to our being the design build contractor of choice for many clients in our specialty markets.
- Best in Class Value Engineering, where we work with design professionals to provide significant improvements and benefits to our clients.
Our core strength is our people.
Their continued contribution and talent is the lifeblood of our company. We thank them for all that they have done and continue to do to make our group successful. We thrive because of them. I am proud to be a part of this team and have great confidence that we will continue our “Progress through Performance” well into the future.
We also appreciate our friends in the industry – our clients, subcontractors, engineers, suppliers and service providers. Everyone, internal and external, current and past, who has been involved with our organization has been an important part of the story of our success. We succeed and fail together. Fortunately for us, it has been a magnificent 70 year success.
